Looking for the best birthday gifts for best friend, with about ₹200 to spend? Same as most people, honestly. Type it into Google in India and the suggestions are full of "under 100", "under 200", "handmade" and "Blinkit". Meanwhile, the shop pages ranking above them start at ₹499 for a photo mug.

So this list starts where the money actually is. You'll find 21 ideas for a girl or a boy best friend, from free to around ₹7,000 split across the group, with rough prices, where to get each one and who'll love it.

There's also a midnight plan with real order cut-offs, what to do when they live in another city or country, and the two birthday "traditions" I'd happily retire forever.

Pick by budget first, then by friend

Budget narrows the shortlist faster than personality does. Here's what fits each tier, with the idea numbers from the list below.

Birthday gifts for best friend under ₹200

This is where most searches sit, and if you ask me, it's where the best gifts sit too. A ₹150 gift that took you three evenings beats a ₹1,500 one that took three taps.

1. "Open when" letters

"Open when" letters

Almost free

Write 8 to 10 envelopes for the year ahead: "Open when you fail a test", "Open when he doesn't text back", "Open when India loses the final", "Open on your next birthday". Paper and envelopes from the stationery shop near college cost next to nothing.

This one's for the friend who keeps screenshots of old chats. If yours never reads anything longer than a text, go with idea 2 instead.

2. One printed page of your best photos

One printed page of your best photos

Under ₹50

Pick 12 photos from your years together, lay them out on one A4 page in any free collage app, and print it in colour. Blinkit prints documents in about 11 minutes at around ₹19 a colour page plus a ₹25 delivery fee (its launch pricing, so check the app).

That's under ₹50 for a page that'll end up on a hostel wall or a fridge. Pick the ugly photos, by the way. Nobody frames the good ones.

3. A snack box of inside jokes

A snack box of inside jokes

Under ₹200

Fill a shoebox with snacks that actually mean something: the chips from the canteen, the toffee you split in Class 8, the Maggi you cooked at 2 am before exams. Tape a chit to each one explaining the joke.

Any kirana store will get you there for under ₹200. Let's be real, the chits are the gift. The snacks are just the excuse.

4. A playlist, plus a month of Premium

Make a 20-song playlist where every song is tied to a memory, and write one line about each in the description. Then pay for a month of Premium on their music app so they can hear it without ads. That's roughly ₹69 to ₹139, depending on the app and whether they're on a student plan.

Send the money by UPI with a cute note. A friend in Pune or a friend in Toronto, it works exactly the same.

5. A coupon book of favours

A coupon book of favours

Almost free

Staple 10 chits into a booklet: "One airport drop, no complaints", "I'll sit through your cousin's wedding with you", "One brutally honest outfit review", "Notes for a full semester". All it costs is one sheet of paper cut ten ways.

Just don't write coupons you won't honour. An unredeemed coupon book turns into a running joke, and the joke's on you.

6. Their favourite dish from your mother's kitchen

Their favourite dish from your mother's kitchen

Free

Every best friend has a dish they only eat at your place: your mom's rajma, the Sunday biryani, the besan ladoos she sends back in a dabba. Ask your mom to make it for the birthday and take it over yourself at lunch.

If they live alone in a PG and haven't had ghar ka khana in months, this one will get them.

Gifts for a girl best friend

Once you're past ₹250, buy one specific thing she'd never buy for herself. And please skip the gift-shop combo of a teddy, a chocolate and a rose.

7. A mini perfume set

  • Bella Vita Luxury Perfume Gift Set for Women (4 x 20ml)₹499₹849See it
  • Bella Vita Luxury Perfume Gift Set for Men, 4 x 20ml₹499₹849See it

Sets of four 20 ml bottles let her try a few scents without committing to one. Bellavita's 4 x 20 ml sets go for roughly ₹400 to ₹500 on sale, but the price jumps around a lot, so compare Amazon, Nykaa and the brand's own site on the day.

The men's version is great for a boy best friend too. Already has strong opinions on fragrance? Then pick something else from this list.

8. A door decor kit for midnight

A door decor kit for midnight

About ₹249

A foil-balloon birthday decor kit costs around ₹249 on BigBasket. Stick it up on her hostel door or in her room at 11:45 pm while someone keeps her busy on a call.

It's cheap, it looks great in photos and it takes ten minutes. Check the hostel rules on tape and balloons first, though, because a warden's lecture at 12:05 kills the mood fast.

9. A silver piece she can wear every day

  • GIVA 925 Silver Lovely You Heart Studs₹999₹2,199See it
  • GIVA 925 Silver Radiant Self-love Star Earrings₹799₹1,799See it

A small 925 silver pendant or a pair of studs is jewellery a best friend can give without it feeling like too much. GIVA has a whole range under ₹1,000, and their pearl pendants go for roughly ₹2,900 to ₹3,300 on Nykaa.

Ignore the struck-through list price. It's always inflated. And ask her sister whether she wears gold-tone or silver before you buy.

10. An instant camera, split across the group

A Fujifilm Instax Mini 12 sells for about ₹6,999 on Amazon and Flipkart (MRP ₹9,499). Split six ways, that's roughly ₹1,170 each, and she gets a gift that keeps making new photos of all of you.

Keep a little extra aside for film packs, because the camera's useless without them. Put one person in charge of collecting money by UPI two weeks ahead, or someone will "pay later" forever. You know exactly who.

Gifts for a boy best friend

Ask most guys "what do you want?" and you'll get "kuch nahi, bro". Believe the spirit, not the words. Get him something he'll use within a week, or an evening with you.

11. A grooming kit he'll actually finish

Bombay Shaving Company's gift sets start around ₹299 for a 7-in-1 kit and ₹499 for a 9-in-1, and go up to roughly ₹1,530 on BigBasket. He'll use every last bit of it.

Only get the beard kit if he actually has a beard. Beard oil for a clean-shaven friend is a joke at your own expense.

12. Two tickets, one of them yours

Stand-up shows, concerts and big match screenings are all on BookMyShow and District. In the metros, expect roughly ₹500 to ₹2,500 per person, depending on the act.

Buy two seats and make the evening the gift, not the ticket. For the guy who swears he wants nothing, this is my top pick.

13. A framed group photo with a caption only you get

Pick the photo from the trip that went wrong, frame it, and add one line underneath: "Manali, 2023. The bus did not wait." Photo frames on FNP start around ₹449, or a local shop will frame the print for less.

Most guys don't bother keeping decor. They keep this one, because it's about the gang and not about him.

For the best friend who has everything

A friend who has everything usually has too much stuff and too little time with you. So give them time, a place, or the past.

14. A day re-living your old spots

Plan a route through your history: the school gate, the chai tapri outside coaching, the college canteen, the first restaurant you could both afford. Tell them only the start time.

It costs auto fares and chai, that's it. It hits hardest once one of you has moved cities and the old places start feeling far away.

15. A workshop you do together

Pottery, baking or a cooking class costs roughly ₹500 to ₹2,500 per person in the metros. Prices and slots vary a lot by city, so look for studios near them a week ahead.

And go with them. A workshop voucher handed over alone has a habit of expiring unused.

16. A donation in their name

Does your friend feed every stray in the colony or never miss a blood donation camp? Give to the cause they already care about, and send the receipt with a note. Any amount works.

Lovely for the friend who finds gifts awkward. Not so lovely for the one who secretly wanted a present, so be honest about which friend you've got.

17. A show of your friendship, built from the group's photos

Your group already has years of photos of this friend, scattered across six phones and three dead WhatsApp backups. Pull them together into a private OTT-style show with their name on the poster and episodes like "First Year Hostel", "Goa 2024" and "The Fight We Don't Talk About".

Drop the link in the group chat at 12:00 and watch the replies pour in. Here's a finished birthday show if you want to see what it looks like.

How to plan the midnight surprise

The 12:00 cake is the default Indian best-friend birthday, from hostels to PGs to family homes. But it only works if you get the timing right.

Ordering a midnight cake from FNP? The cut-off is 7 pm, and it arrives between 11:00 pm and 11:59 pm on the date you choose (FNP's delivery terms). So pick the day before the birthday as the delivery date. Pick the birthday itself and the cake shows up at 11 pm the next night, almost a full day late.

Here's the plan, worked backwards from midnight:

7 days beforeWhat to do:Start a group chat without them. Ask for photos, letters and money
3 days beforeWhat to do:Collect the money by UPI, buy the gift, book any tickets
2 days beforeWhat to do:Deadline for photos and video wishes
Day before, by 7 pmWhat to do:Order the midnight cake with the day before as the delivery date
11:00 to 11:59 pmWhat to do:Cake arrives. One person keeps them busy on a call or in another room
11:45 pmWhat to do:Decor up, candles out, lights off
12:00 amWhat to do:Cake, song, gift, then the letters or the link. Video call open for anyone away
Next morningWhat to do:A message from you alone. It means more once the noise is over

Late-night grocery apps also deliver cakes in many metros, but the hours vary by city. I wouldn't trust them for a hard 12:00 unless you've tested it before. Planning this for a partner instead? The girlfriend birthday surprise ideas go deeper on midnight plans.

Long-distance birthday gifts for a best friend in another city

Distance doesn't ruin a birthday. Turning up at 12:20 does. Everything in this section is about getting there on time.

18. Quick commerce, to their address

Add their address to your Blinkit, Zepto or Swiggy Instamart account and order a cake, snacks and flowers to their door. Coverage changes by city and pin code, so check their address at noon, not at 11 pm.

The same trick works for a printed letter, or that photo page from idea 2.

19. A gift bundle through Swiggy Giftables

Swiggy launched Giftables in Bengaluru in September 2025: bundles of cakes, flowers, chocolates and small gadgets delivered in roughly 10 minutes to an hour, with other metros planned. If your friend lives somewhere it covers, it's the fastest way to send something that looks properly planned. Check the app for their area first.

20. Midnight delivery, even from abroad

FNP says it takes orders from 70+ countries and IGP from 100+, and both do midnight delivery in many Indian cities. The 7 pm IST cut-off still applies, which is 9:30 am in New York during summer time.

Pick the day before the birthday as the delivery date, same as above. Set a reminder so you don't forget.

21. The 12:00 video call, on the right clock

Get everyone on one video call at their midnight, with the cake already at the door. If you're abroad and they're in India, here's when to dial:

US East Coast, summer (EDT)Midnight IST is:2:30 pm the day before
US East Coast, winter (EST)Midnight IST is:1:30 pm the day before
UK, summer (BST)Midnight IST is:7:30 pm the day before
UK, winter (GMT)Midnight IST is:6:30 pm the day before
DubaiMidnight IST is:10:30 pm the day before

If they're the one abroad, flip it and celebrate at their local midnight, not yours.

What to skip on a best friend's birthday

  1. Birthday bumps. Kicking the birthday person while four friends hold them down isn't a tradition worth keeping. In Nacharam, Hyderabad, birthday bumps left a 14-year-old boy needing surgery, and police registered a case.
  2. Cake on the face, eggs and flour. It ruins phones and clothes, gets in the eyes, and the birthday person spends their night washing their hair. One dab of cream on the nose for the photo is plenty.
  3. The teddy, chocolate and rose combo. It's the first thing every gift site pushes, and it tells them you shopped in five minutes.
  4. A personalised mug with no joke on it. Photo mugs start around ₹499 on FNP, which is more than ideas 1 and 2 put together. Only buy one if the print makes them laugh.
  5. A public surprise for a private person. Some friends hate a restaurant full of strangers singing at them. Figure out whether yours wants the whole batch or just three people.
  6. A group gift with nobody in charge. One collector, one deadline, one UPI ID. Otherwise the money arrives after the birthday.

My pick, depending on your friend

Here's what I'd do in each situation:

  • Under ₹200? "Open when" letters plus one printed page of photos. Personal, and almost free.
  • Girl best friend, ₹500 to ₹1,000? A silver piece from GIVA's under-₹1,000 range, with a letter tucked in.
  • Boy best friend? A grooming kit for the gift, and two stand-up tickets for the memory.
  • Friend who has everything? A day re-living your old spots, ending with the 12:00 cake.
  • Lives in another city? A midnight cake ordered for the day before, and the whole group on video at 12:00.
  • Whole gang chipping in? Pool for the instant camera, or pool the photos into one show.

Frequently asked questions

What should I gift my best friend on her birthday?

Get one specific thing she'd never buy herself, like a mini perfume set (roughly ₹400 to ₹500 on sale) or a small silver pendant under ₹1,000. Then add something only you could make, like "open when" letters, and hand it all over at midnight with the group on a call. Trust me, the personal part matters way more than the price.

What is a good birthday gift for a male best friend under ₹500?

A Bombay Shaving Company grooming kit at around ₹299 or ₹499 is my easy answer, because he'll use all of it. For something more personal, frame a photo of the gang with an inside-joke caption. And if you can stretch a little, two stand-up tickets beat both.

What can I make at home for my best friend's birthday?

"Open when" letters, a coupon book of favours, a snack box with a chit explaining each inside joke, or a one-page photo collage printed for under ₹50. Each one costs almost nothing and takes an evening. It's the effort they'll notice.

How do I surprise my best friend on their birthday if they live far away?

Order a cake or flowers to their address for the day before, on FNP, IGP or a quick-commerce app with their address added, so it arrives before 12:00. Then get the whole group on a video call at their midnight. A link to a photo show or a shared playlist travels as easily as a text.

What do you get a best friend who has everything?

Time and memories. Plan a day through your old spots, book a pottery or baking workshop for the two of you (roughly ₹500 to ₹2,500 each in the metros), or collect the group's photos into a show. Curious what the show costs? The plans are here.

What is a last-minute birthday gift I can get today?

Print a page of your best photos through Blinkit in about 11 minutes, grab their favourite snacks from the same app, and write a one-page letter tonight. That's a proper gift for under ₹200. Still short on time? A coupon book takes ten minutes and a stapler.

Prices were checked on 3 October 2026 and change often, especially in sales. We don’t earn anything from these links.
