Most of the time, the best gifts for father from son aren't things you buy. They're repairs. Dads keep things running long after anyone else would have given up: the HMT in the drawer that stopped years ago, the office shoes on their third sole, the faded photo of Dada-Dadi in the drawing room.

And when you do buy something, the real gift is setting it up. A neckband he has to pair himself ends up in a drawer. The same neckband, already paired with his bhajans saved, goes on every walk with him. So every pick below comes with the bit you need to do before you hand it over.

Fix what he already owns

When you get his old things working again, you're telling him they still matter. Do these while he's out, so the gift is the reveal.

1. A show of every scooter and car he has owned

2. His good shoes, resoled and polished

About ₹150 to ₹400

His office shoes, or the good leather Kolhapuris, probably have years left in them. A street cobbler will resole, restitch and polish them for a few hundred rupees, often while you wait. Take them when he's not home and put them back by the door, shining. He'll notice.

3. His old watch, ticking again

About ₹200 to ₹800

Is there an HMT or an old Titan sitting stopped in a drawer? Take it to a local watch repair shop. A quartz watch might just need a battery, but an old mechanical one needs a proper service, so ask for a quote first. Give it back set to the right time, on his wrist if he'll let you.

4. The faded photo of his parents, restored

About ₹300 to ₹800

That photo of Dada-Dadi in the drawing room has probably faded or cracked by now. A local photo studio can scan it, clean up the damage and print a fresh copy for a new frame. Ask them to scan it while you wait, so the original never leaves your hands.

5. A screwdriver kit for the dad who fixes things

  • Portronics Bit Box 24-in-1 Screwdriver Kit₹449₹999See it

Twenty-four bits in a pocket case. If he tightens the cupboard hinges himself, opens the remote's battery cover and takes the mixer apart when it stops, he'll love this. It's a big step up from the one rusty screwdriver in the kitchen drawer. But if he calls the electrician for everything, buy something else.

Tech, set up before you hand it over

Buy it, charge it, pair it, test it, then wrap it. Miss a step and you've given him homework, not a gift.

6. His car's Bluetooth, paired, with a playlist

Free

Pair his phone with the car's Bluetooth, then build a playlist of 30 songs from his college years on the music app he already uses. If the app allows it, save the playlist for offline listening, so it keeps playing on the highway without data. Then teach him exactly one thing: how to skip a song. Bas.

7. His phone, made scam-proof and easy to read

His phone, made scam-proof and easy to read

Free

Give his phone one afternoon. Font size up, spam call blocking on, a daily UPI limit he's comfortable with, and the family group pinned to the top. Save your number and Mummy's as emergency contacts on the lock screen. Then tell him the one rule in plain words (no bank, courier or "electricity office" ever needs his OTP) and write it on a card for his wallet.

8. A neckband for the morning walk

  • boAt Rockerz 255 Pro+ Bluetooth Neckband₹999₹3,990See it

Why a neckband and not earbuds? It sits around his neck, so it can't fall out on the walk or vanish into the sofa. Before you hand it over, pair it with his phone, set the volume and put his bhajans or old songs on a playlist. The battery lasts long enough that he'll rarely need to charge it, which is good news if he always forgets.

9. Bhajans by the puja shelf, no buttons to learn

  • Saregama Carvaan Bhakti Plug and Play₹1,490See it

No battery to charge and no app to learn, because it plugs straight into a wall socket. Mantras and chalisas are grouped by deity, so on Tuesday he can put on the Hanuman Chalisa without asking anyone. Set it up beside the puja shelf and just leave it plugged in.

10. Old film songs, preloaded

  • Saregama Carvaan Mini Legends Hindi₹2,490₹2,990See it

Lata, Rafi, Kishore and others come preloaded, and it plays over Bluetooth, USB and FM too. If he grew up on Tamil, Telugu or Bengali songs, there are editions for those, so check before you order. And before you wrap it, tune it to his favourite FM station.

Health, handed over as a job done

Give these as care, never as a comment on his age. Saying "Mummy and I wanted one at home" works better than any speech.

11. A BP monitor that reads out the numbers

  • Dr Trust IntelliTrack Dual Talking BP Monitor 132₹1,124₹2,343See it

It reads the result out loud and averages the last three readings. That's a big help if his eyes struggle with small digits, or if he never trusts a single number. Batteries come in the box, so keep it right next to his tablets and the reading happens at the same time every day.

12. A massager for the legs he asks you to press

  • Dr Physio Full Body Massager 1021₹1,405₹2,344See it

Does he ask the grandkids to press his legs every evening? This has four detachable heads for calves, shoulders and back. Show him once how to change the heads, and tell him to keep it off the spine and bony spots.

13. A shiatsu massager for his feet

  • Dr Physio Electric Shiatsu Foot Massager 1019₹4,124₹14,063See it

It kneads and rolls his feet, and works on his hands and arms too. Think of the dad who stands all day at the shop or the school, or does his 5 km walk every evening. It's the priciest pick here, so split it with your siblings over UPI. And if he has diabetes or numbness in his feet, check with his doctor before he uses it.

What to skip

  1. A new watch to replace the old one. If the HMT only needs a service, a replacement tells him his things are junk. Ouch.
  2. Earbuds for a 60-year-old. They fall out on walks and vanish into sofa cushions. Get the neckband.
  3. A health gadget with a lecture attached. Hand over the BP monitor with "you're getting old, Papa" and it's going straight into the cupboard.
  4. A new phone as a surprise. Moving his WhatsApp chats, photos and UPI to a new phone is a whole weekend of work. If you do buy one, block that weekend for the move as well.

My pick

  • If there's a stopped watch in his drawer? Get it serviced and give it back on his wrist.
  • If he's out walking by 6 am? The neckband, paired and loaded with his songs.
  • If he does puja every day? The devotional player, right by the mandir.
  • If he's on BP tablets and squints at screens? The talking monitor.
  • If you have no budget at all? The car playlist, plus a trip to the cobbler.

Buying for Mummy as well? The gifts for mother from son list follows the same set-it-up-first rule. And his old tapes, his hometown and his 60th each get their own section in the longer guide to birthday gift ideas for dad.

Frequently asked questions

What should a son gift his father on his birthday?

Something practical he'd never buy for himself, set up and ready to go. A Bluetooth neckband paired to his phone, a talking BP monitor or a speaker of old film songs in his language are all great. Or skip the shop and repair something he loves, like his old watch or his good shoes.

What can a son do for his father's birthday instead of buying something?

Fix what he already owns. Get his watch serviced, his shoes resoled or the faded photo of his parents restored, or set up his car's Bluetooth with a playlist of his songs. They cost very little, and they show you noticed.

What is a good gift for dad from son under ₹1,000?

A 24-in-1 screwdriver kit (₹449) or a Bluetooth neckband (₹999), plus a free afternoon making his phone scam-proof. And don't forget the setup: charge it, pair it, test it and show him once.

What health gift is best for an elderly father?

If his eyesight is weak, a talking BP monitor (₹1,124). If he's on his feet all day, a shiatsu foot massager (₹4,124). And a handheld body massager (₹1,405) takes care of his calves and back.
