The best birthday gifts for dad are almost never on the "for father" shelf. You know the one: wallets, belts, cufflinks, pen sets and a photo frame from ₹449. Your dad probably has two of each already, unopened, in an almirah drawer.

So what does work? Something that looks after him without a lecture, or something that hands back a piece of his younger years. The songs, the scooter, the wedding video nobody has played since the VCR died.

I've put together 22 ideas here, from free to about ₹34,000 a person, sorted by the dad you actually have. Daughters and sons get their own sections, so does the dad who says "mujhe kuch nahi chahiye", and so do the 60th, 70th and 80th birthdays that many South Indian families mark with rituals of their own.

Start with the dad you actually have

His habits matter way more than your budget here. A dad who hums Kishore Kumar in the car and a dad who reads the newspaper twice need very different things.

Most people searching for dad gifts start at "under ₹500", so I'll start there too.

Birthday gifts for dad under ₹500

1. A letter he'll keep in his wallet

A letter he'll keep in his wallet

Free

Write him one page, by hand. Not "you're the best Papa", he knows that already. Write the specific stuff: the night he waited outside your exam centre, what you understand about him now that you pay your own bills, the one thing you never thanked him for.

It costs nothing. Fold it small enough for his wallet. He probably won't say a word about it, and it'll still be in there years from now.

Live in another city? Type it up and send it as a printout through Blinkit's print service, which launched at about ₹19 a colour page plus a ₹25 delivery fee. Just check that his area is covered first.

2. A grooming kit from a brand he'd never buy himself

Bombay Shaving Company kits start at around ₹299 for a 7-in-1 and ₹499 for a 9-in-1, and the bigger sets go up to about ₹1,530 on BigBasket. If he's been using the same razor for ten years, this is a nice nudge. If he's fiercely loyal to his neighbourhood barber, though, don't bother.

3. A small photobook that is only about him

  • Zoomin Softcover Photobook (5.5 inch, 20 pages)₹359See it

Zoomin's little 5.5-inch softcover photobook costs roughly ₹359, and the 5 x 7 softcover is about ₹495. Fill it with photos of just him, for once. His college ID, his first job, him on the scooter, him holding you at the hospital. Order it a week ahead so printing and delivery don't eat into the birthday.

4. The meal he keeps talking about

The meal he keeps talking about

The groceries

Every dad has that one dish he describes better than anyone ever manages to cook it. His mother's kadhi, the rajma from his hostel mess, the fish curry from back home. Get the recipe from Dadi or his sister and make it on the day. You only pay for groceries, and the effort is the whole gift.

Birthday gift for dad from a daughter, and from a son

Google's suggestions split pretty neatly here. Daughters search for handmade, DIY and "with paper" ideas, and sons search for Amazon and watches. Fine, let's do both properly.

5. From a daughter: a then-and-now photo

From a daughter: a then-and-now photo

About ₹19 a page

Dig out an old photo of the two of you, like you on his shoulders at a mela or him holding the back of your cycle, and recreate it today in the same pose. Print both side by side for around ₹19 a page via Blinkit, or tuck them into the photobook above.

Yes, he has to pose for it, so it's only half a surprise. Tell him it's for a family photo and save the big reveal for when the cake comes out.

6. From a daughter: a jar of reasons, one for every year

From a daughter: a jar of reasons, one for every year

Free

One memory or reason per slip, and as many slips as he has years. Any jar from the kitchen will do, and you can rope in your siblings and Mummy to write their share. Fair warning: sixty slips take about two evenings, so start a week out.

7. From a son: his phone, set up properly

From a son: his phone, set up properly

Free

Sons forget this one, and dads really need it. Turn up the font size, switch on WhatsApp chat backup, set up UPI and test it with a ₹1 payment, put emergency contacts on the lock screen and back up his photos.

It's free and takes about an hour. Sit right next to him while you do it, and write the steps on paper so he has them later.

8. From a son: the job he keeps postponing

The inverter battery, the dripping tap, the scooter that's overdue for a service, the bank KYC he keeps saying "ho jayega" about. Get it sorted the week before and tell him on his birthday. It costs whatever the repair costs, and it's great for the dad who would never spend on himself.

Still want to buy him a watch? Go analog, with a leather strap he can wear with a kurta and to the office. I'd stay away from smartwatches unless he already charges his phone without being reminded.

Health gifts that don't say "you're getting old"

The trick is to hand these over as care, not as a warning. And do the first step with him.

9. A BP monitor that lives on the dining table

The Omron HEM-7120 costs around ₹1,700 to ₹2,100 on Amazon and roughly ₹2,000 to ₹2,500 on pharmacy apps. Unbox it with him, take the first reading together and start a little notebook for the numbers. If he's on BP medicine, this is an easy yes, and Mummy will end up using it too.

10. A full-body checkup at home, plus the doctor visit

Home-collection packages like Thyrocare Aarogyam cost roughly ₹1,799 to ₹6,500, and Healthians Good Health Platinum is about ₹1,549. Thyrocare's "Senior Citizen Check Male" (86 tests) was about ₹5,330 in Kolkata, but prices vary by city.

Now the part everyone skips: book the doctor's appointment to read the report at the same time. A PDF that nobody ever discusses is not a gift.

11. A foot massager for the dad who stands all day

  • AGARO Regency Foot Spa Bath Massager₹2,199₹4,595See it
  • Dr Physio Electric Shiatsu Foot Massager 1019₹4,124₹14,063See it

The AGARO manual foot spa is around ₹2,199, and shiatsu massagers from AGARO and Dr Physio cost roughly ₹3,600 to ₹4,100. Think of the shopkeeper dad, the teacher dad, anyone who's on his feet for eight hours. One thing, though: if he has diabetes, ask his doctor before you buy one with heat.

Gifts for the dad who still hums Kishore Kumar

For dads over 55, music is honestly my favourite category. No typing, almost no setup, and nothing for you to explain twice.

12. A Saregama Carvaan

  • Saregama Carvaan Mini Plus Hindi, Vintage Brown₹3,990See it
  • Saregama Carvaan Mini Legends Hindi₹2,490₹2,990See it

Old film songs come preloaded, and there's no internet or app to deal with. On Amazon, the Mini 2.0 is about ₹2,490, the Mini+ is about ₹3,990 (1,000 songs, 10 W, and it can take calls) and the full Carvaan 2.0 is about ₹9,790 (5,000 songs).

It comes in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Bengali, Malayalam and Punjabi, and there's a Bhakti model for devotional songs. Pick the language he grew up with, even if it's not the one you speak at home now. If you're asking me, get the Mini+.

13. An Echo Pop he can talk to in Hindi

The Echo Pop launched at ₹4,999, and Alexa understands Hindi and Hinglish. So a dad who will never type a search can just say "Alexa, Kishore Kumar ke gaane chalao" and get his songs. It needs home Wi-Fi and someone to set it up, and that someone is you, before you hand it over.

14. A Kindle Basic for the dad who reads everything

You'll find it for about ₹5,499 in Amazon sales. Before you wrap it, turn the font up two sizes and load three books he's mentioned. But if he has told you he loves the smell of a newspaper, believe him and buy something else.

What to get the dad who says he needs nothing

When he says "mujhe kuch nahi chahiye", he usually means two things. Don't spend money on me, and nothing in a shop interests me anyway. Fair enough, so give him time and his own past instead.

15. His old tapes, digitised

His old tapes, digitised

From about ₹500

The wedding video on VHS, your mundan on a camcorder tape, the school annual day nobody has watched since 2003. Getting them digitised costs less than you'd think: one 2025 quote from Coimbatore was about ₹500 for the first hour of video and ₹400 for each extra hour, and services in Delhi offer pick-up and drop. Send them off three to four weeks before his birthday.

16. The family albums, scanned

You don't need a scanner. Photograph every print with your phone in daylight with the flash off, so the plastic sleeves don't glare. It's free and takes a weekend, so do it while he's out. Put the albums back in exactly the same order, because he will notice.

17. A show of his life on the TV

Once you have the scans and the tapes, turn them into a show. His name goes on the poster, the episodes go by decade ("Kanpur, 1978", "The Bajaj Chetak Years", "Dadu Mode"), and each grandchild gets a "Who's watching?" profile. Play it on the TV after the cake, and have a look at this sample birthday show to see how the TV version looks.

18. A day in his hometown

Take him back to his school, his old mohalla and the chai stall, if it's still standing. All it costs is a train ticket or a tank of petrol, plus a full day. Call his oldest friend there and set up a lunch, because that's the part he'll keep talking about. If the hometown holds memories he avoids, though, leave this one alone.

19. His old scooter, back on the road

Is the Chetak or the Kinetic still sitting under a cover in the parking? Get a local mechanic to service it or restore it. The cost swings a lot depending on its condition, so get a quote first. This one's for the dad who flatly refuses to sell it.

20. The pilgrimage he keeps postponing

IRCTC's Bharat Gaurav tourist trains cost about ₹18,850 to ₹19,990 per person in sleeper and ₹31,920 to ₹33,995 in 3AC for 2026 departures, and that includes meals, hotels and transfers. Premium routes like the Shri Ramayana Yatra start at around ₹1.14 lakh.

If he's over 60, pay the extra for 3AC and book both parents together. And if he's just retired, our retirement gift ideas have more for this stage.

Milestone birthdays: the 60th, 70th and 80th

In many South Indian Hindu families, these aren't really birthdays at all. They're rituals for both parents, and the children are usually the ones organising them.

60thWhat it's called:Shashtiabdapoorthi (Shashti Poorthi)What happens:The children re-perform the parents' wedding, with garlands, a mangalsutra and a homamA gift that fits:Gold checked for a HUID, and video wishes from relatives who can't travel
70thWhat it's called:Bhima Ratha ShanthiWhat happens:An Ayushya homam and an exchange of garlandsA gift that fits:Health checkups for both parents, or a pilgrimage
80thWhat it's called:SathabhishekamWhat happens:Marks "seeing 1,000 full moons"A gift that fits:The family albums scanned and played for every relative who comes

If your family is new to this, here's a good read on the Shashthipurti tradition. These are couple events too, so our guide to anniversary gifts for parents covers the other half.

21. Gold for the 60th, checked properly

If the family is buying gold for the ceremony (a chain, a ring or the new mangalsutra), look for the 6-character HUID. It's been mandatory on hallmarked gold jewellery since 1 April 2023, and you can check it yourself with "Verify HUID" in the BIS CARE app. Look up the day's gold rate on your own, too, before you pay.

22. Video wishes from the relatives who can't come

Video wishes from the relatives who can't come

Free

Relatives travel in for a Shashtiabdapoorthi, but the elderly ones and the NRI cousins often can't make it. Ask each of them for a 30-second video, filmed in good light, and play them all after the homam. It's free. It just takes about two weeks of chasing people.

How to plan the surprise at home

Timing is what makes a surprise feel planned and not rushed. Here's how I'd lay it out.

  1. Three weeks before: send the tapes off for digitising, and start a WhatsApp group (without him, obviously) for photos.
  2. One week before: order the gifts. If his birthday falls near Dhanteras or Diwali (8 November this year), add a few days, because delivery slots get tight.
  3. The day before, by 7 pm: order the midnight cake. FNP's midnight slot arrives between 11 and 11:59 pm on the date you choose, so pick the day before his birthday, not the birthday itself. Go sugar-free if he's diabetic.
  4. Midnight, or breakfast: lots of dads are asleep by 10:30. Honestly, a breakfast surprise with his favourite food usually goes down better than waking him up.
  5. Evening: family dinner, then the photos or the show on the TV.

Ordering from abroad? Midnight in India is 2:30 pm the previous day in US Eastern summer time, 7:30 pm in UK summer time and 10:30 pm in Dubai. FNP's 7 pm IST cut-off works out to 9:30 am in New York in summer, so set an alarm.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Another wallet, belt or pen set. These fill gifting catalogues because they're easy to ship. Dads don't actually want them.
  2. A smartwatch or gadget with no setup. If he has to figure it out on his own, it's going back in the box.
  3. A cake that ignores his diet. Sugar-free cakes exist. Just order one.
  4. Gold without a HUID. It's six characters and you can check it in an app. No excuses.
  5. A big party for a dad who hates attention. Some dads would much prefer ten people and a quiet dinner. Ask Mummy before you book anything.

My pick

Here's what I'd do, depending on your situation:

  • Budget under ₹500? A handwritten letter, plus his phone set up properly.
  • Daughter with one free afternoon? The then-and-now photo, printed side by side.
  • Son who wants to buy something? The Carvaan Mini+ in his language.
  • Dad who wants nothing? Digitise his tapes and play them on the TV after dinner.
  • Turning 60? Help with the Shashtiabdapoorthi, collect the video wishes and check the gold.
  • Retired and restless? A Bharat Gaurav pilgrimage in 3AC for both parents.

And if you only do one thing, go after his old photos and tapes. Stuff gets used up, but those get watched again and again. The same idea works for Mummy too, and our guide to birthday gifts for mom picks it up from there.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best birthday gift for dad?

Something that either looks after him or brings back his past. A BP monitor, a home health checkup or a Saregama Carvaan works for most Indian dads. His old photos or tapes, turned into something the whole family can watch together, work for almost all of them. Just please, no more wallets or pen sets.

What can I gift my dad on his birthday under ₹500?

A handwritten letter, a Bombay Shaving Company kit (from about ₹299), a small Zoomin photobook (about ₹359 to ₹495) or his favourite home-cooked meal. And setting up his phone properly costs nothing, yet it's often the most useful thing you'll give him.

What do you get a dad who says he wants nothing?

Skip the shops and give him time and his own past. Digitise his old VHS tapes, scan the family albums, take him back to his hometown for a day or book the pilgrimage he keeps postponing. Nothing in a shop interests him anyway, so don't fight it.

What should I gift my dad on his 60th birthday in India?

In South Indian families, the 60th is often a Shashtiabdapoorthi, where the children re-perform the parents' wedding. If that's your family, help organise it and make sure any gold you buy has a HUID. Otherwise, a health checkup for both parents, a pilgrimage or a show of his life played for the whole family all make a lovely 60th.

How can I surprise my dad on his birthday at home?

Order a midnight cake by 7 pm the day before, or plan a breakfast surprise if he sleeps early. Decorate one room, get the family together for dinner and end with old photos or video wishes on the TV. If he hates a fuss, keep it small.

What can a daughter make for her dad's birthday?

A handwritten letter, a jar with one memory for every year of his age, or a then-and-now photo where you recreate an old picture of the two of you. All three cost next to nothing. They just take an evening or two of your time.
