Searching for the best gifts for groom to be? You'll get the same page every time: cufflinks, a grooming kit, a watch. They're fine, honestly. The real problem is timing.
On the wedding day he's on a ghodi, in a crowd or in a photo. Whatever you hand him goes into some cousin's pocket and turns up three weeks later.
So plan his gifts around his week instead. Every Indian wedding already has moments made for giving the groom something: the roka, the bachelor trip, the haldi, the wedding morning, the sehra bandi, and the joota chupai, when the bride's sisters steal his shoes.
Below are 18 ideas in the order he'll live them, with rough prices in rupees and who usually gives what. Shopping for her too? The surprise gifts for the bride to be list is the other half of this one.
His wedding week, and which gift goes where
Each of these moments already expects a gift. Use them, and your gift gets a proper stage. Miss them, and it ends up on the reception table with the dinner sets.
| When | Who usually gives | What works | Rough budget |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roka, tikka or engagement | Who usually gives:The bride and her family | What works:One personal piece, with a note | Rough budget:₹1,200 to ₹8,200 |
| Bachelor trip, 3 to 6 weeks out | Who usually gives:His friends, plus a box from the bride | What works:His share of the trip, a kit for later | Rough budget:₹600 to ₹4,200 each |
| Haldi or pellikoduku | Who usually gives:Cousins, bhabhi, friends | What works:A turmeric aftercare kit | Rough budget:₹500 to ₹1,500 |
| Wedding morning | Who usually gives:The bride | What works:A letter, plus a show or a scent | Rough budget:₹0 to ₹2,300 |
| Sehra bandi and ghodi | Who usually gives:His sister, bhabhi, cousins | What works:A kalangi, shagun ending in 1 | Rough budget:₹101 to ₹2,500 |
| Joota chupai | Who usually gives:His friends, on his behalf | What works:A ready envelope and a negotiator | Rough budget:Agreed in advance |
| After the pheras | Who usually gives:The bride, his friends | What works:Something small that night, a spa voucher for later | Rough budget:₹1,400 to ₹7,500 |
Regional weddings shuffle this order a bit. A Bengali groom's gaye holud comes first: married women put the turmeric on him, and then it travels to the bride's home with the tattva trays. A Tamil or Telugu Brahmin groom has the Kashi Yatra, where he sets off for Kashi with an umbrella and a walking stick until the bride's father talks him into coming back.
Roka and engagement gifts from the bride
At a Punjabi tikka, the bride's father puts the tikka on the groom and blesses him, and the two families exchange gifts. Your own gift as the bride comes on top of all that. Keep it personal, because the families have the formal stuff covered.
1. Engraved cufflinks or a silver bracelet
FNP lists personalised silver initial cufflinks at around ₹1,200 and an engraved silver bracelet at around ₹1,400. Engraving adds a few days, so order at least a week before the engagement.
Be honest with yourself about the cufflinks, though. They only make sense if he wears double-cuff shirts, or will at the reception. If he lives in T-shirts, get him the bracelet.
2. A pair watch, one for each of you
Titan's Bandhan range sells his-and-hers pairs in one box: around ₹6,900 with maroon leather straps, and ₹7,200 to ₹8,200 in gold or rose gold steel. He wears his from the engagement, you wear yours, and those matching dials show up in every pre-wedding shoot.
Does he already have a watch he loves? Then don't. His half will just live in a drawer.
3. A book of your chats from roka to wedding
- Zoomin Softcover Photobook (5.5 inch, 20 pages)₹359See it
In an arranged match, a lot of the falling-for-each-other happens on WhatsApp between the roka and the wedding. Pick 40 to 60 screenshots, like the first awkward hello, the first voice note and the first fight about the guest list, and print them as a small photobook.
Softcover photobooks start at roughly ₹300 to ₹600 on Zoomin or Canvera. Give it two weeks for printing and delivery. Met in college? Use photos from those years instead.
Bachelor party gifts from his friends, and one from her
Goa is the usual bachelor trip, and its season (October to March) lines up nicely with wedding season. Rishikesh, for rafting and camping, and Pondicherry are calmer. Bangkok is the big splurge.
4. Pay his share of the trip
Honestly, the best bachelor party gift is a trip where the groom never opens his wallet. Travel blogs put a Rishikesh weekend at roughly ₹5,000 a head and three days in Goa with flights at around ₹33,500, though both swing a lot depending on dates and where you fly from.
Let's do the maths. If eight friends cover his ₹5,000 Rishikesh share, that's ₹625 extra each. On a ₹33,500 Goa trip it's about ₹4,200 each. Collect it on UPI before anyone books anything.
Keep the trip at least three weeks before the first function. Nobody wants a sunburnt groom at his own haldi.
5. A bartending kit for the trip, and the house after
FNP sells a 14-piece bartending kit for around ₹2,600. It earns its keep at the villa, then goes home with him to the first flat. Obviously, not one for a guy who doesn't drink.
6. Gag gifts that pass the Nani test
Gag gifts are half the fun of a bachelor party, and also the thing people regret most afterwards. My rule is simple: if it would embarrass him on the family WhatsApp group or in a cousin's Instagram story, it stays on the trip.
A better joke? Get his friends to write a printed "groom's contract" together, with clauses like "will reply to the in-laws' group within 24 hours" and "will learn every masi's name by the reception". It costs one printout, and it's still funny when someone reads it out at the sangeet.
7. A box from the bride, delivered to the trip

About ₹500 to ₹1,500
Yes, people really do search for bachelor party gifts for the groom from the bride, and it's such a sweet move. Pack a small box with his favourite snacks from home, ORS sachets for the morning after, and a note saying you're glad he has these friends. It'll cost roughly ₹500 to ₹1,500.
Don't courier it to a Goa villa and hope for the best. Give it to the best man to carry, and tell him to hand it over on the second night.
Haldi day gifts for him
His haldi is the only function where he's allowed to look a total mess. Telugu grooms have pellikoduku, their own turmeric ceremony a day or two before the wedding. Practical gifts help most here.
8. A turmeric aftercare kit
Turmeric stains skin, nails and anything white for days. So pack coconut oil for his hair and skin, the face wash he already uses, a dark towel he can throw away, a zip pouch for his phone and a fresh banian. A chemist plus Blinkit or Zepto will get you all of it for around ₹500 to ₹1,500.
Hand it to his cousin, not to him. He won't have clean hands for two hours.
9. A grooming appointment, four days out
Book him a haircut, a beard shape-up and a head massage four or five days before the wedding. Pair it with a men's self-care hamper, like Kimirica's at around ₹1,500 or FNP's grooming set at around ₹2,900.
No facials or new products in the last week, please. A rash in the wedding photos is forever.
The wedding morning: what the bride gives the groom
"Gift for husband to be on wedding day" is the biggest search in this whole topic. And the window is short: after breakfast, before the dressing and the sehra.
Getting it to him is the whole trick. Send it through his sister or best friend with a time ("give it to him at 9, before he starts getting ready"). Never trust a courier on the day.
10. A one-page letter

Free
Write it by hand, on one page. Stuck? Try three parts: the moment you knew, one thing about him you've noticed that nobody else has, and one promise for the first year that's specific enough to check. "I'll learn your Nani's dal before our first Diwali" beats "I'll always love you" every time.
It's free, and it's the only thing on this list he can't buy for himself.
11. A show of his life before you
Ask his mother for 10 baby and school photos, and his school and college friends for one 20-second video each. Then turn them into a private show with his name on the poster and episodes like "The Early Years", "Hostel Days" and "The Last Bachelor Trip".
His sister can drop the link in his WhatsApp on the wedding morning, or you can play it on the TV at the sangeet. Here's a sample wedding show if you want to see how it looks.
12. A scent for the day
Whatever perfume he first wears on the wedding morning, he'll connect it with that day for years. Nautica Voyage sells for around ₹2,300 on FNP, but any scent he already likes is fine. Test it on his skin a week before, because a heavy perfume under a sherwani on a hot baraat is a lot.
Sehra bandi, ghodi and joota chupai: the baraat-day gifts
In a Punjabi wedding, the groom's sister ties his sehra once he's dressed, and then everyone there gives him gifts and cash for luck. In some families his bhabhi and cousins take turns, in order of relation.
At the ghodi, his sisters and cousins feed and decorate the mare, his bhabhi lines his eyes with surma, and cash is waved over him and given away. The Punjabi wedding traditions page on Wikipedia has the full order if you want it.
13. A kalangi for his safa, from his sister
A kalangi is the jewelled brooch pinned to the front of the safa. Kundan kalangis go from around ₹700 on sale at Nykaa Man to roughly ₹2,500 for heavier pieces. Ask whoever's tying his safa what colour it is. And before you buy a new one, check whether the family has an heirloom kalangi he's expected to wear.
14. Shagun for the sehra bandi

From ₹101
Cash at the sehra bandi is expected, in amounts ending in 1: ₹101, ₹501, ₹1,101, ₹2,101. The idea is that zero marks an end and one marks a beginning, so a lot of envelopes come with a Re 1 coin stuck on.
Get crisp notes from the bank a week before. And write your name inside the flap, because a dozen envelopes will be in his lap within minutes.
15. A joota chupai kit from his friends
At the mandap, the bride's sisters steal the groom's juttis and charge a fee to give them back. Traditionally the sisters asked for gold kalecharis and the cousins for silver. These days it's mostly a cash negotiation that the whole wedding watches.
Your gift here is showing up prepared. Bring an envelope with the amount his parents have agreed, a small gift for each of the bride's sisters and cousins (chocolates or a silver coin each), and pick one friend as the negotiator, so the groom isn't haggling in his sherwani.
Some friends keep a spare pair of juttis in the car too. It'll save his feet, if not his wallet.
After the pheras: the wedding night and the first month
By the vidaai, you've both been awake since before dawn. So anything for the wedding night should take two minutes to hand over, max.
16. A small wedding-night gift from the bride
First-night gifts for the husband get their own searches, and my advice is to keep them small. The engraved bracelet from idea 1 (around ₹1,400), with the wedding date on it, is lovely if you held it back. So is his favourite mithai from your city, because the groom is often the one person at his own wedding who never got to eat.
17. A couple spa voucher for the week after
This one's for his friends to pool: a couple spa for the week after the reception, when they're both completely wrecked. A couple session at O2 Spa runs roughly ₹5,000 to ₹7,500, and O2 sells e-vouchers in ₹500, ₹1,000 and ₹2,000, so the gang can chip in separately.
18. A caricature for their first wall
If they're setting up their own flat, a caricature of the two of them is a fun first thing for the wall. Bigsmall's personalised caricature prints start around ₹2,000. Living in a joint family? Give it a miss, because the wall space isn't really his to give yet.
How much to spend, by who you are to him
| You are his | Typical budget | Best bet | Skip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bride or fiancée | Typical budget:₹0 to ₹8,200 | Best bet:The wedding-morning letter, plus one piece he'll use | Skip:Anything for his wedding outfit |
| Sister | Typical budget:₹700 to ₹5,000, plus shagun | Best bet:The kalangi and the sehra bandi envelope | Skip:His safa or sherwani |
| Bhabhi or cousin | Typical budget:₹500 to ₹3,000 | Best bet:The haldi kit or the grooming appointment | Skip:Gifts that compete with his sister's |
| Best friend or the gang | Typical budget:₹600 to ₹4,200 each | Best bet:His trip share and the joota chupai kit | Skip:Gag gifts that end up online |
| Bride's family | Typical budget:Shagun at the tikka and milni | Best bet:Personal, voluntary gifts | Skip:Anything that looks like a demand |
At a Sikh or Punjabi milni, the bride's relatives give shagun (cash and clothes) to the groom's relatives in order of age, so the bride's family already has its formal moment. Anything beyond that should be personal and voluntary. A gift that's expected or demanded is dowry, and dowry has been illegal in India since 1961.
Mistakes to avoid
- Surprising him with his sherwani or safa. Wedding outfits get fitted weeks ahead and matched to the bride's colours. A surprise one is just a second outfit he can't wear.
- Leaving engraving to the last week. Personalised cufflinks, watches and photobooks all need extra days. Weddings restart after Dev Uthani Ekadashi on 20 November 2026, with muhurats bunched between 21 November and 12 December, so order before Diwali on 8 November.
- Gag gifts that travel. What's funny in Goa is not funny on the family WhatsApp group.
- Handing him anything mid-ritual. Under the sehra, on the ghodi or at the mandap, he can't hold anything. Route it all through his sister or best friend at a set time.
- Unlabelled boxes at the reception. Reception gifts all go into one big heap. Write your name inside the box as well, or he'll never find out the watch was from you.
My pick
- Bride with no budget? The letter, delivered at 9 am by his sister. Nothing else here even comes close.
- Bride with ₹1,200 to ₹8,200? The letter, plus engraved cufflinks or the Titan pair watch at the engagement.
- His sister? The kalangi at the sehra bandi, and a show of his childhood photos on the wedding morning.
- His friends? Pay his share of the trip, then run the joota chupai so he never has to haggle in his sherwani.
- Last minute? A grooming appointment and a 10-photo show of his school years. You can do both in a day.
After the wedding, both families will send you hundreds more photos, and a wedding video album is the easy way to share them with everyone. A year later, those same letters and photos come back out for the first anniversary, and that's where our anniversary surprise ideas for your husband pick up.
Frequently asked questions
What should the bride gift the groom on the wedding day?
Write him a letter by hand and have his sister or best friend deliver it on the wedding morning, before he starts dressing. If you'd like to add something, go for one personal piece like engraved cufflinks (around ₹1,200) or a perfume he'll wear that day (around ₹2,300).
What is a good gift for the groom from his sister?
A kalangi for his safa (₹700 to ₹2,500), given at the sehra bandi, plus shagun in an amount ending in 1, like ₹1,101. Want something sentimental too? Collect his childhood photos from your parents and give them to him as a show or a small album on the wedding morning.
What do friends gift the groom at the bachelor party?
Split his share of the trip between you, and add one useful thing like a bartending kit (around ₹2,600). Gag gifts are fine, as long as they never make it to the family WhatsApp group or Instagram.
Does the bride's family give the groom a gift?
Traditionally, yes, at specific rituals. At a Punjabi tikka the bride's father blesses the groom and the families exchange gifts, and at the milni the bride's relatives give shagun to the groom's relatives. Keep these personal and voluntary, though, because anything demanded is dowry, and that's illegal.
What can I gift the groom to be under ₹1,000?
A kundan kalangi on sale (around ₹700), a small photobook of your chats (₹300 to ₹600), or a turmeric aftercare kit for his haldi from the chemist. But honestly, a one-page letter costs nothing and beats all three.
When should I give the groom his gift?
Match each gift to its moment: personal pieces at the engagement, the trip at the bachelor party, the letter on the wedding morning, and the kalangi and shagun at the sehra bandi. Never hand him anything mid-ritual or on the reception stage, because it'll get lost.
