My one rule for the best gifts for parents under ₹500: buy one thing they both use, not two cheap things, one each. Split ₹500 between two people and you've got ₹250 each, which gets you a keychain and a pen. Spend it on something they already do together (the 6 am chai, the puja shelf, the family album) and it'll get used every single day.

That's how this list works, whether it's for their anniversary, Diwali on 8 November or just because. Every product sells for ₹500 or less, and five of the ideas cost ₹150 or less. Do check the total at checkout, though, because a delivery fee on a small order can sneak a ₹249 gift past ₹300 before you notice.

Things you make or do for both of them (₹0 to ₹150)

These cost next to nothing, but you do have to be there. Our anniversary gift ideas for parents already cover the classics, like the recreated wedding photo and letters from every child, so I've picked four different ones here.

1. An afternoon setting up both their phones

An afternoon setting up both their phones

Free

Sit with both phones for two hours. Bump up the font size, add emergency contacts to the lock screen, pin the family group, back up the photos and delete every app they never open. Then write the three steps they always forget on a card in big letters, and keep it by the TV.

It costs nothing, and it'll save you a lot of "beta, ek minute" calls.

2. A show of their first year of marriage

3. A notebook of their recipes, in their words

A notebook of their recipes, in their words

About ₹100

On a slow Sunday, sit them both down and write out the dishes the family can't live without. Mummy's rajma, Papa's one famous egg curry, the achaar Nani taught them. Note their measurements exactly how they say them ("andaaz se") next to the real ones. That ₹100 notebook becomes the family's copy for the next generation.

4. Breakfast in bed on the anniversary morning

Breakfast in bed on the anniversary morning

About ₹150

Make poha or upma, cut some fruit, pour two cups of chai and carry it all in on a tray before either of them is up. Add a marigold from the gate and a one-line note. The groceries come to about ₹150. And for once, neither of them has to make the morning chai.

For the chai they share, and what goes with it

Most parents have been having their chai side by side for decades, once at 6 am and again at 4 pm. Get them something for that little ritual, not something that sits next to it.

5. A pair of glass chai mugs

  • Borosil Chai Time Glass Mug Set of 2, 210 ml₹248₹295See it

Two plain glass mugs, so Papa can see the colour of the chai and comment on it every single day. They're borosilicate, so chai poured straight off the flame is fine. Trust me, these will get used far more than a printed couple mug, and nobody has to drink out of "Mr" every morning.

6. Panchmeva for the 4 pm chai

  • Farmley Panchmeva Dry Fruit Mix, 160 g₹289₹299See it

Almonds, cashews, both kinds of raisins and dates in one pack. Put it in the bowl that sits between them at chai time, in place of the namkeen packet. The raisins and dates are still sugar, though, so for a diabetic parent, plain almonds are the better buy.

7. Masala chai, or filter kaapi

  • VAHDAM India's Original Masala Chai, 100 g₹299See it
  • Sleepy Owl Instant Filter Coffee Jar₹349₹400See it

The chai is loose leaf with whole spices, for parents who boil it with ginger and still say it isn't strong enough. The kaapi is for a South Indian home where nobody has time to make decoction every morning anymore. Buy whichever matches what's in their cup right now, not the one you wish they'd try.

8. A box of motichur laddu for the anniversary

  • Bombay Sweet Shop Mighty Motichur Laddu, Box of 9₹475See it

Nine boondi laddus in a gift box, for the muh meetha on the anniversary or at Lakshmi Puja. Two people can't finish nine, and that's kind of the point. One goes to the neighbour, one to the temple, and they get to tell everyone who sent them. For a diabetic parent, though, don't even think about it.

9. A French press for Sunday coffee

  • Wonderchef French Press Coffee Maker, 350 ml₹499₹1,050See it

This is for the couple who drink chai all week and treat themselves to proper coffee on Sunday. At 350 ml it makes exactly two cups, just right for a house the kids have moved out of. Get a small bag of coarse-ground coffee with it, because instant powder turns to sludge in a press.

For the puja shelf, with Diwali coming

These belong to the space they share, so nobody can call it "your Papa's gift". Shopping for the whole family this festival? Our Diwali gift ideas for family have all the order dates.

10. Mogra agarbatti for the daily puja

  • Soulflower Mogra Luxury Agarbatti (20 sticks)₹150See it

They're hand-rolled and charcoal-free, so the puja room smells of mogra and not smoke. Each stick lasts about half an hour, long enough for the whole morning puja. If they light one in the evening too, grab two packs.

11. A Bhagavad Gita in Hindi for the morning paath

  • Crossword Shrimad Bhagavad Gita Yatharoop (Hindi)₹320₹399See it

A hardcover Gita with the Sanskrit, the Hindi meaning and a commentary, for parents who read a chapter after the morning puja. It's the ISKCON translation, so check their shelf first. If there's already a Gita Press copy sitting there, they don't need a second Gita.

12. A Ganesh-Laxmi puja box for Diwali

  • Soulflower Ganesh Laxmi Puja Ritual Gift Set₹400See it

A Laxmi coin, dhoop cones, agarbatti, puja oil, roli and clay diyas, all in one box, so the Diwali thali is sorted. Great for parents who do the puja together and always run out of one thing at the last minute. Give it a week before Lakshmi Puja, not on the day.

13. A lotus diya lamp for the puja thali

  • Phool Saroj Lotus Metal Diya Lamp₹425₹845See it

A metal lotus with six diya points, so one lamp lights up the whole thali at aarti. Clay diyas get swept away after Diwali, but this one comes out of the cupboard year after year. Add cotton wicks and a small bottle of ghee, so they can light it that same evening.

For the TV unit, the photo album and the balcony

14. A lucky bamboo in a glass bowl

  • Ugaoo Lucky Bamboo Plant, 2 Layer₹249See it

Two layers of bamboo stalks in a glass bowl, for parents in a flat with no balcony and zero patience for soil. It sits on the TV unit or the dining table, and all it needs is fresh water once a week. Plenty of families keep one for luck anyway.

15. This year's family photos, printed for their album

This year's family photos, printed for their album

About ₹300

Most family albums stop the year everyone got a smartphone. Pick 30 photos from this year (the family group, the cousins' weddings, the grandchildren), get 4 x 6 prints at a local studio and slip them into a plain ₹100 album.

Write the date and the place on the back of each print. Ten years from now, nobody will remember which wedding it was. Not even Papa.

16. A money plant sent with a Diwali card

  • Ugaoo Golden Money Plant Diwali Gift with Greeting Card₹349₹499See it

Can't make it home for Diwali? The plant reaches their door with a greeting card, so at least something from you arrives. A money plant is also very forgiving about a missed watering in a busy festival week. Order by the last week of October and check that the site delivers to their pin code.

What to skip

  1. Two separate ₹250 gifts. One for Mummy and one for Papa usually means two things neither of them uses. One shared gift beats both.
  2. Printed couple mugs and "Mummy Papa" cushions. Your parents will be very polite about them and keep drinking from their old steel tumblers.
  3. Mithai for a diabetic parent. Even sugar-free sweets are full of ghee and nuts, so ask what they're allowed before you buy anything sweet.
  4. Paying more for delivery than for the gift. Small orders often come with a fee. Buy two things from one shop, or just pick up the agarbatti and chai at the local market.
  5. Leaving photo prints for Diwali week. Studios and plant deliveries both slow down in the festival rush. Print and order by 25 October.

My pick

  • If they share the morning chai? The glass mugs plus breakfast in bed, for under ₹400.
  • If it's for Diwali? The puja box, given a week before Lakshmi Puja.
  • If it's their anniversary and money's tight? Breakfast in bed and the recipe notebook, about ₹250 for both.
  • If they have everything? This year's photos, printed and dated for their album.
  • Buying for your spouse's parents too? Our list of gifts for in-laws has easier picks for a house you're still getting to know.

Frequently asked questions

What can I gift my parents under ₹500?

Go for one thing they both use, like glass chai mugs (₹248), this year's photos printed for their album (about ₹300) or a Diwali puja box (₹400). No budget at all? Cook them breakfast in bed, or spend an afternoon sorting out their phones.

Should I buy one gift or two for my parents?

One, at this budget. Split ₹500 two ways and you get two forgettable things, while one shared gift gets used every day. Keep the separate gifts for their birthdays.

What is a good Diwali gift for parents under ₹500?

A Ganesh-Laxmi puja box (₹400), a lotus diya lamp for the thali (₹425) or mogra agarbatti for the daily puja (₹150). If you can't be there, send a money plant with a Diwali card (₹349) so something reaches their door, and order it by 25 October.

What can I give my parents on their anniversary without spending money?

Breakfast in bed, a notebook of their recipes you write down together, or an afternoon fixing both their phones. All three cost ₹150 or less. You just have to be there in person.

Is a plant a good gift for parents?

If they already keep plants, yes. If they don't, a lucky bamboo in a glass bowl (₹249) is about as easy as it gets, since it only needs fresh water once a week.
