Need a last minute birthday gift, like, now? What you can still pull off depends on what the clock says. Before 6 pm, a cake or flowers can still come today, and before 7 pm the midnight slot is still open. After that, it's quick-commerce apps, the shops on your street and whatever you can make with a pen and a printer.

Here's what people miss, though. The gifts that hold up best at 11 pm are ones nobody could have bought earlier anyway: a letter written tonight, a page of photos printed within the hour, a playlist from the years you've known them. So this list runs by the clock. Jump in wherever you are on it.

Before 6 pm: delivery apps and the shops on your street

FNP takes same-day orders until 6 pm (6:30 pm for a fixed time slot), and IGP runs same-day and 90-minute delivery in many cities. Where Swiggy's Giftables runs, a wrapped bundle can reach their door within the hour. And your local shops don't need a pin code check at all.

1. A string of printed photos from the studio

A string of printed photos from the studio

About ₹300

WhatsApp 12 favourite photos to your nearest photo studio, since a lot of them turn prints around within a couple of hours. Grab a cheap set of fairy lights from a quick-commerce app and peg the photos along it, across their wall or above the bed. It looks like you planned it for a week.

2. Mithai from their favourite halwai

Mithai from their favourite halwai

About ₹400

Go to the exact shop they love, whether that's the motichoor ladoo place or the Bengali sweet shop near the station. For parents and grandparents, this beats any cake, no contest. Bonus: plenty of halwais stay open long after the delivery cut-offs.

3. A bento cake for two or three

  • FNP Mango Cheerful Bento Cake (250 g)₹449₹549See it
  • IGP Rasmalai Bento Cake (300 g)₹545See it

A half-kilo cake goes stale at an office birthday, with a flatmate or on an evening for two. A mini one is just right. Pick the rasmalai one if they'd take desi flavours over chocolate any day.

4. Roses, delivered today

  • FNP Vivid Love 6 Red Roses Bouquet₹499₹699See it
  • FNP Happy Birthday Rose Bouquet₹649₹749See it

Six red roses for a partner, and the bouquet with the birthday tag for Mom or a sister. Pick a fixed time slot so the flowers show up while they're home, not stuck at the office. And please don't send red roses to a friend's mother or a colleague. That's what the birthday bouquet is for.

5. A name cake from the neighbourhood bakery

A name cake from the neighbourhood bakery

About ₹700

Call your local bakery by 4 pm and ask for half a kilo with the name piped on, ready by evening. Lots of them can do it the same day, it's often fresher than an app cake, and you just pick it up on the way home. If the family's vegetarian, ask for eggless.

Before 7 pm: the midnight cake, and the room

FNP's midnight orders close at 7 pm. The cake arrives between 11 and 11:59 pm on whatever date you enter, so enter today's date, not the birthday's. If they live in another city or country, our long distance birthday guide has the time-zone table and a full countdown.

6. A room you decorate after they're asleep

A room you decorate after they're asleep

About ₹300

Birthday decoration kits cost ₹249 to ₹399 on Blinkit, Zepto or Instamart and usually turn up within half an hour. Put it up while they're out or asleep, and use paper tape, not cello tape, so the wall paint survives the morning. Adding tea lights? Keep them well away from balloons and curtains, and only light them as they walk in.

7. A half-kilo truffle cake for 12:00

  • FNP Chocolate Truffle Cake (500 g)₹549₹649See it

Almost nobody says no to chocolate truffle, and half a kilo feeds the four to six people still awake at midnight. Before you plan the whole evening around it, check that the midnight slot shows up for their pin code. Then ask whoever's home to hide it on a high shelf, not in the fridge someone opens for water at 11:30.

At 10 pm: quick commerce and a pen

By now the delivery slots are closed and the shutters are coming down. You've still got a quick-commerce app, a printer you don't own and your own handwriting. Honestly, that's plenty.

8. A coupon book of favours

A coupon book of favours

About ₹30

Cut two A4 sheets into eight coupons each and write one favour on every coupon: a Sunday breakfast, one argument you'll lose on purpose, a 5 am airport drop. Staple them together. Skip vague ones like "one hug", because the specific ones are the whole gift.

9. Open-when letters, written tonight

Open-when letters, written tonight

About ₹50

Write five short letters and put them in plain envelopes: open when you're stressed, when you miss home, after a bad day at work, when you need a laugh, and on your next birthday. All it takes is about 45 minutes and a pack of envelopes. Lovely for a partner or a best friend. For a colleague, it's a bit much.

10. A page of photos and a letter, printed through Blinkit

A page of photos and a letter, printed through Blinkit

About ₹70

Lay out 12 photos on one A4 page in any free collage app, type a short letter on a second page, and send both to Blinkit's print service. At launch it charged ₹19 a colour page plus ₹25 for delivery and took about 11 minutes, so check today's rate in the app. Tape the photo page above their desk or on their door so it's the first thing they see in the morning.

11. A snack box of their exact favourites

A snack box of their exact favourites

About ₹300

Order the exact things they love (that one chips flavour, the toffee from school, the instant noodles they won't admit to) and pack them in a shoebox with a chit taped to each. For a hostel or PG friend, I'd pick this over any delivered cake.

12. Seven emails from strangers, all day tomorrow

  • Oye Happy Mails from Strangers₹490See it

Volunteers send seven warm, oddly specific emails between 11 am and 8 pm on the date you pick, written from facts you share. Order it tonight, as early as you can, and fill in their email and the date after you pay. A friend who loves attention will be grinning all day. Anyone who'd find mail from strangers creepy, not so much.

Already past midnight? Gifts that reach them in minutes

If it's already their birthday, nothing physical is reaching them before breakfast. An e-gift card from Amazon, Myntra or Nykaa arrives by email within minutes, but on its own it feels like an afterthought. So send it with one of these.

13. A playlist, one song for every year

A playlist, one song for every year

Free

Make a playlist with one song from each year you've known them, in order, and name it after an inside joke. Send the link at 12 with a line about why the first song is on there. Meeting them this week? Print it as a QR code on a card and hand it over then.

14. A treasure hunt for the morning

A treasure hunt for the morning

About ₹20

Live under the same roof? Write six clues on paper chits and hide them overnight: the fridge door, inside a shoe, under the TV remote, with the last one at the cake or whatever gift you managed. Half an hour and a roll of tape, bas.

15. A show of the last year with them

What to skip

  1. Ordering before you check the pin code. Same-day and midnight slots vary by pin code. Finding out at 6:55 pm that their area isn't covered costs you the whole evening.
  2. The first combo on the app's home screen. That teddy-and-chocolate bundle at the top says you spent 30 seconds. Spend two minutes and order their actual favourites.
  3. Covering the delay with a story. "It was stuck in transit" rarely survives an order timestamp. A last-minute gift with an honest note goes down much better.
  4. "A proper gift later" with no date. If the real gift is coming, tell them when, and put it in your calendar right now.

My pick

  • It's 5 pm and they're in your city? Mithai from their favourite halwai, or a name cake from the bakery.
  • It's 6:45 pm? The midnight truffle cake, then the room once they're asleep.
  • It's 10 pm? The printed photo page with open-when letters, ready by 12.
  • It's already their birthday? The playlist at 12, and the show by breakfast.
  • It's for a best friend? The snack box and the coupon book. Our birthday gift ideas for a best friend has bigger plans for next year.

Frequently asked questions

What can I give as a last minute birthday gift?

Before 6 pm, a same-day cake or bouquet (from about ₹449). At night, a printed page of photos with a handwritten letter. After midnight, a playlist or an e-gift card with a personal note, but never the card on its own.

Can I get a birthday cake delivered on the same day?

Yes. FNP takes same-day orders until 6 pm and midnight orders until 7 pm, and IGP runs same-day and 90-minute delivery in many cities. Quick-commerce apps deliver cakes in 10 to 30 minutes where they operate.

Which apps deliver birthday gifts in 10 minutes?

Blinkit, Zepto and Swiggy Instamart sell cakes, flowers, chocolates and decoration kits with 10 to 30 minute delivery in most metros. Swiggy's gifting section, Giftables, started in Bengaluru and sends ready bundles straight to the birthday person. Just check each app against their address.

What is a good digital birthday gift?

A playlist with one song for every year you've known them, a show of photos and video wishes sent as a link, or an e-gift card with a note. If they love attention, Mails from strangers (₹490) is a fun one.

What can I make for a birthday in one hour?

Open-when letters, a coupon book of favours, a printed photo page with a letter, or a treasure hunt of paper clues. Each one costs under ₹100, and any of them beats a random combo from an app.

Prices were checked on 3 October 2026 and change often, especially in sales. We don’t earn anything from these links.
